About Egypt

Egypt has an enormous political and cultural influence in the Arab and Islamic world, especially because of its large population. But it also had a great significance in the history of human civilization, as evidenced by many excavations and ancient architectural monuments. One of the early advanced civilizations of the Old World, Ancient Egypt, developed here as early as 3000 B.C.. The coveted country on the Nile experienced an eventful history after the time of the Pharaohs, until it regained its independence in 1922. But even now the power struggles for Egypt did not end, they continued within. The protests of the Arab Spring in 2011 also affected Egypt. This was followed by the national crisis in 2013/14.

Egypt’s southern neighbours are Sudan and Libya in the west. The northern natural border is the Levantine Sea, the easternmost part of the Mediterranean. The nearest island is Cyprus, about 380 km from the Egyptian coast as the crow flies. In the north-east, Egypt borders Gaza and Israel. In the southeast it has an extensive coast to the Red Sea with its two arms of the sea, the Gulf of Sues and the Gulf of Aqaba and Eilat respectively. The latter Gulf is opposite Saudi Arabia and Jordan, where ferry connections exist. Africa’s longest river, the Nile, flows through the country from south to north as its most important lifeline and flows into the Mediterranean in a delta. Another lifeline is the Suez Canal, an artificial waterway of outstanding importance for the world economy that connects the European Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean. Much of the country’s territory is deserts.
